Dara’s Dugout: Royals Heating Up

DaraHeaderDara Avi

If you would have told me 2 or 3 weeks ago that the Kansas City Royals would take 2 of 3 from the White Sox and only allow 5 runs, I would have had a hard time believing you.

Here’s the good news, the Royals are heating up! They’ve won 6 of the last 9. We’re finally starting to see a glimpse of familiar, 2015 Royals baseball. The Royals are starting to turn a corner, they’re heating up!

So, does that mean the slump is over? Only time will tell, but it will be nice to face the Minnesota Twins for a 3-game series; a team with far more struggles than the Royals. They have the worst record in MLB, with only 11 wins.

My Concerns:

My biggest concern right now is Alex Gordon. The collision with Moose on Sunday terrified me. For a minute, it felt like that moment during the Rays game last July when Gordon was injured. Fortunately, it looks like he’s just “sore”. I’ll be honest, though, I’m feeling sore about his batting average. Plain and simple, it stinks! The Royals just re-signed him to a 4-year, $72 million contract a few months ago. Don’t get me wrong, his defensive skills are next to perfect, but his at-bats need some serious work. The Royals are a quarter of the way into the season and Gordon’s only batting .211 with 4 home runs and 10 RBIs. It could be worse, though. Just look at Kendrys Morales. I still believe both will find a way to get out of the hitting slump they’re in, but something needs to happen soon. Morales got Sunday off as a “mental health” day. His batting average is an appalling .190. He’s hit 5 home runs and had 17 RBIs. He was asked to come in during a 1-run game, in the 9th inning to pinch hit against David Robertson (1.02 ERA) and struck out. That’s a tough position and a lot of pressure, but he’s a professional hitter.

Hot, Hot, Hot:

Eric Hosmer continues to swing a hot bat but, he’s not the only one. Hello, Paulo Orlando! The Royals are heating up and so is Paulo! I don’t want to talk much about it though, because I’m afraid I’ll jinx him (No, I’m not superstitious).

Looking Ahead:

Tonight, the Royals begin a 3-game series with the Minnesota Twins. On the mound will be Ian Kennedy (4-3, 3.24 ERA) against Ricky Nolasco (1-2, 4.74 ERA). My gut says the Royals will get a 3-game sweep (Please, don’t be mad if my jinx actually exists).

Weekly Cy Young pick: Jake Arrieta (seriously, he is unstoppable right now!)
