Chiefs Prediction by K.Lew

It went by quick and here we are last game of the season. This has been a wild ride for Chiefs fans this season. To top it off it was just announced that Alex Smith has a lacerated spleen that happened last week during the Raiders game. Chase Daniel will once again start in the last game of the season versus the Chargers, just like last year. San Diego can make the postseason in back to back seasons by beating Daniel at quarterback both times. There is a slim chance the Chiefs will make the playoffs if certain scenarios fall into place. I don’t foresee this happening and think the focus will be shifted to a rebuilding off-season after this game.
Chiefs have their hands full this Sunday as San Diego has been playing fairly well. Chargers’ passing game is a lot better than their running game which will be a better match up for Kansas City’s defense. Holding the Steelers to 20 points last week was something the Chiefs defense should be proud of. Rivers is playing through an injury right now. Kansas City’s number two pass defense will need to contain Antonio Gates and Eddie Royal.
Offense is Kansas City’s big issue and it will be in even more distress with the absence of Smith. It is almost not even surprising that he is out with a serious injury due to his lack of protection all season. He was sacked six times versus Pittsburgh when the injury occurred. The offensive line needs some serious fixing up. Last time these two teams met in October San Diego had key members of their defense missing. Brandon Flowers, who has been a big playmaker this season, left that game in the first quarter with a concussion. Bolstered up, the San Diego defense will be better equipped this time around. Kansas City will rely on the running game heavily. Daniel himself will run for possibly up to 70 yards. I expect a big performance from Justin Houston as he is two sacks away from tying Derrick Thomas’ single season sack franchise record. He currently leads the league with 18 sacks on the season. Going up against DJ Fluker he has a good chance of breaking the record.
I was not too confident about the Chiefs going to this game and that was before Smith’s absence was announced. It will be interesting to see how Daniel performs. Playing at Arrowhead is always a huge advantage but it will not be enough to override all of the Chiefs problems.
